Property code: SZ432

Refurbished to a very high standard with elegant decor and furnishings, this delightful cottage is perfect for couples, groups and two canine chums.

This welcoming holiday home, is a luxurious cottage for up to six people in beautiful Eskdale. Refurbished to a very high standard, with three lovely bedrooms and boasting glorious views it makes the ideal base to explore this much-loved valley. The owners have used a mixture of elegant decor, sumptuous furnishings and high spec appliances to make this characterful rural idyll into an indulgent modern cottage. If this weren't enough to tempt you then it also overlooks the wonderful narrow gauge steam railway known as the La'al Ratty which winds its way up the valley. Why not pour yourself a glass of something refreshing, sit on the raised terrace on a sunny afternoon and wave at the trains as they go by? Marvellous.

The Eskdale Valley is one of the most unspoilt areas in the National Park, from here you can make the most of some wonderful walking and cycling opportunities. Take the Ratty steam engine to the foot of the fells at Boot or to the nearby coast at Ravenglass or just relax and enjoy the wonderful views in the valley that Wainwright described as, “One of Lakeland’s loveliest.' It’s a place of hidden treasures with crystal clear rivers, dramatic waterfalls and even a Japanese garden lovingly restored from its Victorian heyday. There are also five excellent pubs serving local ales and home-cooked food for you to sample from.

If you'd like to explore slightly further afield, you could pop to Muncaster Castle, just over five miles away. This award winning visitor attraction has a rich and spooky history to investigate as well as glorious grounds and bird of prey displays. The village of Ravenglass is just beyond Muncaster, it's the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park and it has a charming bygone era feeling. There's Roman history to explore in the form of a well preserved bathhouse and a railway museum for an interesting rainy day visit. If you've come armed with golf clubs, Muncaster has a delightful parkland course while Seascale, eight miles away, boasts a renowned links to challenge you.

(Please note that, due to the nature of the garden layout, the property is not suitable for children under 18 years).

On arrival at the property you first come to a glass porch which will give you your first taste of the stunning views from the property. Moving inside to the gorgeous stone flagged main hallway you'll find the elegant living room to the left. There's a deep comfortable sofa and two armchairs arranged around a wood burner and a Smart TV. A charming window seat offers panoramic views of Birker Fell and the valley floor as well as a place to wave at the passing steam engines.

Onward to the sociable open-plan kitchen and dining area. Designed to a very high standard, it's a paradise for foodies and a wonderful space to gather the family together for long post-dinner conversations about your Lakeland adventures. The stylish dining room has a large wood burner, a dining table for six and two armchairs arranged around French doors leading out onto a stunning elevated terrace. The modern kitchen is well equipped for cooks with a handsome range cooker with two ovens, two traditional range-style hobs and two induction hobs. There's a large fridge/freezer with ice maker as well as a microwave, dishwasher and all the crockery and cookware you'll need for your stay. From the kitchen you can also access the walk-in larder as well as a spacious utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, ceiling airer and Belfast sink. There's also bags of space in here for your pooches and all your muddy boots and outdoor clobber. From here you access the downstairs shower room with WC and large wet room style mixer shower.

Moving upstairs you'll find the three characterful bedrooms all of which have decorative fireplaces and well-chosen decor. First to the light master bedroom which has a king-size bed, a distressed wood wardrobe and a dresser for storage. You'll love the wonderful view to the fells from its large window. The double bedroom has a gorgeous blue colour scheme, views to the hills at the rear of the house along with two dressers and hanging hooks for clothes storage. Lastly to the twin room (which can be made into a super-king upon request) has a classic french feel to its decor with a wardrobe and dresser for storage and that wonderful view to Birker Fell from its window. The amazing bathroom is an absolute treat with a huge shower enclosure with mixer shower and drencher head and a stylish pebble wall detail as well as a dainty slipper bath with a wonderful view up the Eskdale Valley to Harter Fell. What a wonderful place to soak away tired fell walking muscles!

The outside space is no less lovely than the interior with a stunning elevated terrace leading out from the dining room, a sloping lawn and mature trees and shrubs giving year-round interest. With steam trains chuffing past below and glorious views it is absolutely the perfect place for indulging in a sunny morning cuppa or an evening glass of wine. To the rear of the house there is even a dog shower room for keeping the pooches clean after muddy walks, this also doubles up as a storage room for bikes (bring your own locks if you require them). There is also a gravelled parking area to the side of the house.

This is an excellent holiday cottage, very well-equipped and tastefully furnished, and the view from the french windows/ patio is outstanding. It is well suited to people who do a lot of self-catering as the kitchen is well-equipped, there is a lovely long dining table and the fridge is a good size. There are a lot of really good walks from the dooRead morer, both along the Esk valley or up onto the fells. Having the little railway on the doorstep is a bonus as you can take the train out and walk back. Hide

Scale End is a lovely cottage in a wonderful, quiet location. Eskdale has some great hikes. This is a great location, both the property and the surrounding area for walks both long and short, flat(ish) and tall. Take note of the access restrictions, but the suggested alternative is fine, which we used a few times. This is a really comfy house.
